guernu tree (Polylepis), and come to think of it rather hard ? He says a mature Polylepis or ayaceta is probably over 100 yrs old. Cutting Polylepis is prohibited. It makes excellent charcoal. Calls Ctenomys "centenejo." Says there are "conejos" on the pampa Humatae. [illegible] Dec. 11 (Tue.) Put the high altitude yote in the carburetor and advanced the spark. Big improvement. Left after breakfast for Pasto Grande, but stopped at the two desert beyond Pampa Humatae (15,000 ft) for much photographing of the desert. Shot 4 Ctenomys, all alpinus. Drove on at lunch time. Made the steep ascent OK where the road crosses the river, then drove across the Feitosa hills to Lago Viscacha. Many vizcacha and looked good for Rheas but didn't see any. Enormous herds of alpacas around Lago Viscacha and in the valley to the east. Over 100 in many herds, well over 1000 alpacas in this "fertile" valley. Some grazing out in "bare" desert. Camped at 15,000 ft. where rocky hill meets rich green tree at edge of fertile valley - vizcachas, alpacas, and andinos boliviensis, and Visacachas abundant. Ants fast and trips. Dec. 12 Trips took 2 Chreomys and 3 Phyllotis. Took photos of Andinongo Bolivianus and shot another duck. Then drove past Lago Loricata (many flamingos), Pasto Grande, to Caecochara turnoff. Many alpacas; some herds of 500. Much tree activity. The road back to Caecochara was about same but looking vizcachas and rheas.
