PEARSON 1951 (26+10 respectively) very sparsely vegetated sand dunes. Also 15 Shrews in grass and ledge along creek about ½ mile east of Dillon Beach. At 9 p.m., run the beach grass and sand dune twice and had 2 Meristae and 4 Peromyscus. Quite a few Meristae droppings in spots and indefinite runways. Numerous rabbit droppings and fof? tracks. Saw two jackrabbits while setting traps. Night clear, warml, but windy. Oct. 20 Pm morning 3 more Merista, 2 Perithos, and 1 Peromyscus. Sierra Co. Sage Hen Creek, V.C. Camp, 6300 ft., Sierra Co. Calif. Nov. 4 Arrived V.C. camp about 3:30 p.m. Nov. 3 South Grinnell Club. Set 13 Shrews and 7 Museum Specials baited with walnuts along the stream above the headquarters, almost all set for water shrews — for which the terrain looked good. Also set 6 Schuylers for flying squirrels. Terrain about half snowy—half bare, the result of melting of about 4 inches of snow. Night calm, clear, below freezing soon after dark. Flashlighting after supper but saw no mammals. Traps caught only 1 mouse, a Meristae (montanae?) on a log in stream. Heard coyote. Tracks of srowls or jack rabbit in snow and deer. During day saw several golden-mantles and chipmunks. Shot one chipmunk. Left 3:30 p.m., home 10 p.m.
