Left for Chagres about 11:30 and arrived at 3. The
deer skin + skull quite sturdy. Smith had moved
from our camp west of the town back to the hotel in
town. Skinned until about midnight.
July 30
Finished skimming and packing. morning
[illegible] sunny. Light
showers during the night but certainly not more than 1/4 inch.
No rain yesterday or the 2 days before that.
Left 1 p.m. and arrived Gerardo at about 6. Numerous
cranes between Castilla and Soano. also kingbirds,
scissor tailed + vermilion flycatchers, 3 doves. looked
for swallows most of the way and saw 1 Tree swallow.
July 31
Left 8:30 for Bogota. 1 dead + Didelphys on road
at Salto; several 2/3 grown porch young (65 days +/-).
Arrival Bogota 1:30.
Aug 5
40 museum species bated with walnuts in rather
tick, ferry brush on the hillsides near the Feriender
caught 4 mice (3243-3246). 3245 + 3246 near rock
outcroppings.
Aug 6
Went by bus with Borero + Smith to the Paruro of
Guereros between Zipaquirá and Pacho. According to
Borero it is not as good paruro as, for example, the
Paruro of Soano. I was impressed by the scarcity of
birds. I don't think I saw more than a dozen individual
birds in 5 hours out on the paruro (snipe, big thrush, sparrow,
warren, swallow, flycatcher). Several hjaras (3246-3247), two
frogs (3249, 3245), no mammals. In one swampy
part of the paruro and nearby saw [illegible] many runways,
cuttings of grass and Espeletia flowers, and droppings that
