Drove to a mine tunnel a few miles north of Hoofax one branched horizontal tunnel perhaps 300 ft deep and two almost vertical tunnels branching off from this. All fairly damp, trickle of water on floor, - but no bats or droppings. Also looked in attic of Buzard's store in Willow Creek (sic) attic for Corypholineus - but no bats) and in attic of a house near Willow Creek crossroad. All these places looked like good bat roosts - why no bats?
Put out about 16 museum specimens along a trickle below steep bank along road at camp - where I saw skunks? last night. Bank mostly ferns with dense dogwood - oak - madrone forest at top of bank.
Went bat shooting in Willow Creek after supper. Bats appeared while it was still light (6:50) flying too high for shooting, then gradually worked lower. At least two sizes. Murray and I got 5 of the big slow ones - Eptesicis all had disappeared by 8 p.m.
Shot jack rabbits an way back to camp:
One of the numerous people with whom I talked today mentioned a limestone cave south of here. Reached by driving from Willow Creek toward Saliger, where the road crosses the river turn right on the old county road and drive to Mr. Gould's place. Gould's brother-in-law (or some such) showed the entrance to the cave!
