O. P. PEARSON 1949 5 Put 3 mink sets in marsh below log pond, 2 of them where Squirrel shot at one yesterday. Evening cool, clear, few bats feeding near spruce but several out over pond. Aug. 17 No mink in traps. Set 4 more, making 7. Also set 44 oatmeal-baited museum specials in short grass along in marsh below log pond dam. After lunch drove with Murray up toward Kane Ranch where Cogswell had reported grown young redwoods with woodrat nests at the bottom. Stuck the truck while turning around so Murray set the woodrat traps while I went to Kane Ranch for help. Spent rest of afternoon trying to extricate trucks. Aug. 18 Up early to hunt night hawks + bats, 4 night hawks were circling over the lower Maple Creek bridge and headed south without circling any more at about 5:35. The last bats had disappeared before this, heading toward the woods to the east in remarkably straight flight -- 50 yards or more without a swerve. Nothing in 46 traps in short grass in marsh, nor in mink, weasels, and woodrat set near camp. One Spilogale in Schuyler in clump of young redwood up on the hill toward Kane Ranch, and 2 woodrats nearby. Put about 25 oatmeal-baited museum specials along 2nd stream north of lagoon. Dirty loam along the stream with small spruce and alder. Not really gloomy forest.
