July 14 No trips spring. Home 10 a.m.
July 22 Left 8:15 a.m. with Mary, Pitler, and Dr. Esteban for
Napa Co. Comperthina. First to Knowville where we
looked in 3 tunnels. One steep tunnel with "debris" over it,
skipped shaft
entered by ladder. I went down about 75 feet and never did
see bottom, no bats. This one (3) was
up on hill. No 1 (no data) was on hillside
behind abandoned house, and No 2 (one awake &
cory) was just along road to Lower Lake. (1)
Dr. caretaker here mentioned more
tunnels 4 miles up right fork of road (which later returns to lower lake
road at Reiff) so we drove there, a location known as
Reid Mine. The manager said no bats in the tunnels &
crossed out
near the headquarters but referred me to 3 further up
the road. Two were a few hundred yards back an old
road (blocked) to the right of the road about ¾ mi. N of the
headquarters. (One of these was a good tunnel but no bats. The other
was more than half full of very murky water, we didn't go
into it). The other tunnel had a narrow opening at the
left edge of the road about 1¼ mi. above the headquarters.
In this tunnel, which had several short branches, we caught
2 active & cory and 2 torped & f. Thus all 308+ bats
were awake, both ff torped.
Home 7:15 p.m. via Argentin & Pope Valley.
