The female came up & landed "looked over" several, then covered one of them with her body and wings, making motions as if tucking the baby in. Mary said it was obvious that she was trying to have it attach itself. Mary caught the ? and attacked young just as they took off. Out of 10 young of similar age had chosen the same one that had been attached to her last batch she had been carrying when I saw her last week.
The mothers were able to fly with today's youngest young attached (6. ) g.
June 9 left 6:15 p.m. for Lassen with Anita et al. Slept at burning owl place south of Corning - but no owls. Saw several barn owles over rice country. Drove over Mt. Lassen via Red Bluff and Minned. The road opened May 30 this year, which is unusually early. Stopped along the road 5.9 miles south of Old Station at a very large pile of lava blocks a hundred yards or so west of the road. This is yellow pine country and about 5100 ft., but heard at least 2 cornes.
Went into Lahway Caves about 5 p.m., but no bats. At 9 p.m. 3 or more large bats were flying inside the cave and in and out of the tunnels. Went into the tunnels and saw flying 1 corn? and 2 mystic? but nothing hanging. Temp in North Branch (with lantern) 7.6; in blind chamber of South Branch 6.8;
