Pat River Power Station,
April 2, 1949
April 2 left 6:30 p.m. yesterday with Dwight & Mary + 3 bats for Parson. Left out between Red Bluff + Balding, but rained so left early 5 a.m., arrived Dabney Cave 8 a.m. No bats at all in north branch; considerably better than before. In south branch found a few at crossroads and a few in left chamber, but not nearly as many as on previous visits. All bats seen were banded. Re-weighed those weighed before: average loss about 0.5 g. Temp in left chamber 50°; at ceiling of crossroads 48°. Mycotic contamination.
In Parson Cave the bats were fewer than entire than on last 2 trips: none look even as far as where the flash-light photos were taken. Considerable ice on ceiling this morning, and it a snowy sort of snow, some of which had fallen to floor. I believe this was the form in which it was removed commercially. Many fewer bats here than before, almost all the females large nipples. Banded about 4♀♀ and a couple of males. All except 1 of the females had large nipples; all except about 4 were banded. No bats in the two caves. Brent Parson said it crowded last night, but chipmunks + hawks were out during day (50°). Temp in Parson Cave where there were both bats and ice on ceiling was 46°.
