P. PEARSON 1948 Subway Caves, 11 mi. SE Hat Creek, Shasta Co., Calif. Oct. Nov. 6. 1362 ♀ Corynorhinus rafinesquae intermedius 109 x 49 x 17 x 37 Collected at 9:30 P.M. PDT on roof of cave. Had been hanging at same place at least since 7 pm. When collected the female had edematous coils, was cold and quite torpid. Did not wake up apparently during the next half hour of hanging around cave. When collected she was mounted by an awake, active male whose penis was slightly longer and pinker than another (or same) active male caught a few minutes later. Vulva of female was capped by a pale amber gelatinous mass which, when squeezed, was underlain by semen-like fluid; when she was killed a half hour after capture, a pearly gelatinous globule of fluid 3 mm in diam could be pressed out by pressing on abdomen. Nipple medium - large, no fluid expressible. Vaginal opening small but not tiny, much fat. Uteri quite avascular (and ovula), probably because full while still torpid. Ovi not enlarged but vagina possibly starting to mount; RT horn slightly larger. Large follicle in left ovary, medium large in right; all medium follicles and layer under secreting sac appear be dark-translucent discs surrounded by white fibrocellular rings. Both ovaries with small-med. follicles. *This fluid full of sperm. Sperman arteries pricked. Vagina red cornified Parrish Cave near Ice Cave, 12 mi. SE of Hat Creek.
