Hog
aug 20 Numerous tracks and a few droppings along the dusty road from Bosone's Harbor to Ranch, also one dead boar in the road, apparently shot.
the one much hard (the mother, says they are shot wherever passable)
aug 29 Numerous footprints and droppings, the latter consisting almost entirely of acorns.
sept 2 Saw one in grass oak west of main ranch fence. Ranch hands that hunt them with dogs at night, apparently making kills frequently. A sow killed by them tonight had young with her.
sept 3 Went up to look at the sow they shot. Quite good sized perhaps 70-100 lbs. One young black and white piglet was hiding under her stern when I walked up but scampered off when I approached to about 10 yards. It weighed [illegible] 3 lbs. or so. The mother had a distinct more of burlette. Her stomach contained about half by volume fruits of Opuntia; also acorn or Photinia? fruits, etc. Had a bit of the barn for lunch, -> Manganita
sept 4 "Red" Crew, the ship captain and ranch manager, says when pines are abundant he has seen as many as 100 in a day. They never bother the lambs or chickens. He was told that they run in 7-yr. cycles, and it is his opinion that they are just recovering from the defoliation.
sept. 13 Saw a sow and 4 black and white young.
