1945 Pearson Aug 28 0 (bot) Journal 16 Santa Cruz Island, Pisonero Harbor, Santa Barbara Co. Left Santa Barbara about 1 p.m. D.S.T. on the Blue Fin Beverly Alexander, Captain. Sea very calm. Saw 1 school porpoises, also seals? and sea lions. Sharks astonishingly abundant: Pitelka estimated 5 per acre and 113 per acre over a stretch of several miles (somewhat crossed out on the mainland side of mid-channel). Some weighed well over 30 lbs, and I saw 2 that had been hooked that were 4 to 5 feet long. The ones out in the channel were "backing" with dorsal fin and tail exposed. When swimming the tail is not moved strictly laterally, but in a slight arc -> [drawing] stern view Landed at Pisonero Harbor about 3 p.m. No one in sight crossed out around the pier or in the buildings thereabout & walked up the valley about 3 miles to the ranch buildings where we found only a Chinese cook and one ranch hand. The manager and 3 other men showed up later and we cleared with them about staying at Pisonero Harbor in the house there. First impression of Santa Cruz is none of a rather steep sloped island, misty-foggy around summits, eroding rapidly; vegetation principally live oak, ceetia (crossed out) cota and cerecylptus + Because of drought almost all
