Glamorous Gull
Larus hyperboreus
June 8 Point Barrow, Alaska
I collected one out of a flock of 6 in the open water south
of camp. There were none there today (9%). Gulls around
to be this species are generally in sight along the ocean
ice.
June 11
There were 2 hovering over a patch of open water
north of the air strip in the p.m.
June 12
2030 one flew over south of camp.
June 22
They are regular along the edge of the
ocean ice near T1
June 29
Immature birds are showing up along
the shore back of camp.
July 8
At least 40 were feeding on the garbage in the open
water near T1. Birds in immature plumage are
showing up.
July 10
Uniat, 400 ft., Alaska
Several small groups + single birds were
seen following the river
Aug 1
East Dumbell, 110 mi 55 E Barrow, Alaska
Flocks of 10 or more were seen feeding in the
dump areas around camp. But toward the
end of our stay became fewer, no doubt due
to cases of lead poisoning. One bird taken
showed evidence of recent nesting with
atretic follicles in the ovary.
