16 June Barrow, Alaska
Sadlerochit River - Tom Cade reported
seeing 300-400 in small bands moving
north. Mostly cows with calves. Perhaps
a dozen bulls in all. Pilot saw them
a week earlier.
17 June Flight to Beadle River Coal Mine thru East & West
Port.
2 groups (5, 10) seen on trip to De Beade
south where more than 50% tundra open.
4 groups seen on return from Bliville in
similar open areas (2, 5, 1, 9).
Cade reported that Sig Olson had located
calving ground of east of Black Lake last
year. Also that Mohr had seen 30,000
in Romanoff set at the same time.
21 June Patrunge River to Cape Thompson route
No caribou seen until south of big A.
Small bands of up to 40 and perhaps Total
300 seen between Patrunge and Carwin
Mine and inland to headwaters of Spinich R.
One group of 25 was bedded down in snow
near marmit bar. A red fox was seen
watching them. We saw no caribou on
trip along Kuskopuk R - Kuskopuk R & Cape
Thompson & return via Spinich until we
the headwaters of the latter. Trails here
were oriented as per attached map.
