Childs 1957 Ranger 3 19 July Petrona River, mi 56 Cape Sabine, Alaska moving up wind a mile to the Wolf Camp. Two swift calves were seen today (4:00) lost from the herd. Here, as well as at the base camp the impact of the horses is tremendous and everywhere we have been except in very highly developed Tundra Wet Meadow 23 July There is no area along the river where there are no tracks. Aug. 2 Saw a bull in the far ridge to the East and took after it. There were three of which we got two, one spire. The one I got came toward me jumping up in the air trying to get the scent from the air camp over the ridge. It never saw me. Aug. 4 A herd of 75 was spread over four miles, several of which ran towards Owl Ridge, some came over the bluff near T. W. After a few moments, the whole herd ran off towards the NW, we thought it frightened by me. It turned out to be a grizzly that 5-10 minutes later came over the ridge 500 feet from me. I shot at it but it ran upriver and escaped. This strange shot the canion were so frightened by a prude as slow as a grizzly.
