Rangifer arcticus
June 7 Anaturnk Pass, Alaska
Saw a herd of 8 and one single to the
north of the Eskimo village from the plane.
June 10 Enroute to Wainwright, Alaska
Saw 200-300 in herds of 5 & 80 from Wainwright
to Pitmegea River. In the valley of Pitmegea
there were two herds of 16 & 24.
20 June
20 Jun Eskimo got 3 - probably those seen 6/20.
21 June 18 morg T lagoon in late afternoon, a
result of warm weather and mosquitoes.
3 July
4 moved along the coast in the land of fog this
morning while Mule Soloman + 9 set out T5+T6.
Mule went for gun but they got passes line to the
west.
6 July Lie Journal. A herd of from 10 to 25,000 surrounded
us this morning. The effect on the marsh was
spectacular. Along the transects 210 out of
306 were set off and the vegetation everywhere
was trampled. It was easy to see how the
"caribou trails" develop as they move across
where they had developed overnight that
will take years to erase. It would not take
a herd of this size more than a few days to
devastate the vegetation more than the moisture
in a summer high. Again this is a situation
which differs from Barrow as Barrow has
probably never been invaded by a factor.
