Childs 1958 Delphinapterus leucas 21 May Barrow, Alaska Rausch has obtained the guts and stalls of the Two white whales taken in the Village. He obtained a 2" embryo from the larger of the two. 24 June Patwega River, Cape Saline, Alaska. We was treated to a most unusual sight at the mouth of the river when we returned from the lagoon. There was a school of Beluga whales I estimated at 50t and 900mm as "hundreds". They were just taking it easy on the surface, blowing occasionally, but apparently just lazily circling around on the surface. We got to the edge and fired, made with the 30-30 and 9 with 16ga #1 such at one at about 10ft range but with apparently no success. The herd left immediately upon heavy our shot for the ice which had come back in at about ½ mile. We could hear them blow long after they were out of sight. as usual the camera was at home!
