Horribilis 1 July Patnayea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska Tracks of adult with cub were seen along river by cabin. 18 July Patnayea River, 7 mi SE Cape Sabine, Alaska Tracks of a small one seen 29 July Patnayea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska After Supper I spotted a black object which I thought at first was a Moose on the slope of the mountain across and slightly upstream. The weather was quite foggy and it was quite dark. Closer examination with Binoculars showed it to be a bear. We dressed and took after it. By this time the bear had moved to a point near the owl mound at the top and proceeded to lie down and get to sleep while we watched. Although it occasionally looked out in our direction it did not see or hear us and there was no wind. We climbed the far side of the ridge and shot it at 16 paces. It came up a roaring but Pete let it in the back bone and the shotgun got it in the thorax. Pete was convinced it was a Black Bear from the color and size of head but I saw the lump and measurement to later showed it to be a large black male grizzly.
