Childs 1955 Wolrus July 16 Wainwright, Alaska The ice moved in during the early morning as the eskimos went off hunting. Several hours later they returned with walrus and tales of huge numbers of them. Talked my way into going and this was a mixed blessing. We went out in a skin combah and as I was not dressed for it we took in some water, mainly snow. After we got out onto the pack ice the wind dropped & the sun came out. On stopping we could hear the walrus making an very grunt noise in the distance. We spotted them for a large piece and rode up to 200yds & hauled the combah upon the ice. A ridge protected us from view so we could crawl up to 50' from the head of 30t. I took pictures while the boys shot 4. We then had coffee and tied the lift to the boat & started back. The wind from the south had moved the ice so we had to go north before cutting into shore & south to the village. It took me home & get warm again upon return at 2345. There have been over 1000 walrus out these. July 17 Many walrus (100+) in sight from shore or ice ½ mi out. This Sunday so no one hunts.
