2. alopep lagopus Childs 1958 31 may Pitmegea River Cape Sabine, Alaska scats were seen on high places day with fur from both Lemmy & Dicrostopy 1 June Pete saw me across the river last night and I saw one this a.m. They bark frequently and the noise carries well. It sounds like a small dog. One of my census stakes had been broken and a fox scat was on it. Scats are abundant in the high spots and owl mounds. 3 June When the fog lifted and I saw the trap lines in the evening, the tundra was radiant and there was no wind. The pair of foxes were butty on Cabin Mt. and another pair was seen across the river. A fifth was seen first by Pete on table bluff back of camp and later we watched it proceed up river. Then there must be a sixth near Falcon Rock. There then must be at least 4 pairs in the area. 4 June Beared [illegible] on bluff near bear carcass. 5 June One was on sand bar near old campsite when we came over the hill. It proceeded to swim across the river very slowly. It hardly bothered to shake when it climbed out. My theory that the river is a barrier is shot!
