25 May Wainwright, Alaska
Gay Hodgebins, pilot, reported seeing
numbers of snowshoe hares and ptarmigan
inland south of Barrow recently.
He said "there was lots of wild
life there now." This is in light of the fact that hares
and owls have been practically unknown this year at Barrow
or Wainwright.
30 may Patwagea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Fresh tracks seen near old campsites
31 may Found two adults asleep on the tundra
to the west of Lorn Marsh. They were bedded
down in an area we had seen some snow
geese earlier. It was surprising to find them
there when there was dry ground and
higher ground a few hundred feet away.
Walked to within 100' of them when the
smaller and thinner of the two which
I took to be the male apparently heard me
as the wind was in my favor. He ran
fast for over a mile while the other
fatter (= pregnant ?) trotted off after
them, stopping often to watch us. Coupled
with the more obvious evidence of
mouse activity makes the prospects
