Childs 1960 Minutes occonous 27 May Petwegen River, Cape Sabine, Alaska Caught 3 black in 1 & 1/2 this a.m. Almost no sign of winter activity. Most of last summer's runways are obliterated. Even the best developed runways do not appear used. It would be impossible to tell from the condition of the tundra that there were any mice here last year. In the tussocks around T4 there were a few showing winter cutting but nothing compared to last year. It would be my guess that the first cold snap of the winter wiped them out. CHECK WEATHER RECORDS ON THIS. 28 May No winter nests have been found and there is almost no sign of winter activity My guess is a weather catastrophe in the fall is responsible for crash. 31 May There is considerably more sign--run- ways and green clippings in the area of T5-8. The catch may be low due to the cold weather and snow softer during the runs. Jägers (2.7) seem to be running the lines pretty regularly for lack of any other source of food! June Piled up traps and got 6 mice. This due to change in weather - warm & no snow. Much more sign in T5-8 area where dead Carex & Eriophorum provide cover.
