5. Long-tailed
July Patuxent River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
I had to discard, a piece of sediment
near the tent. 2 dark shore parasitism
were attracted to one other at the
edge of the river 50' away. The long-
tail gave a threat display, leaning on
forward and calling a "chow" and flew
directly at them. There was no doubt that
he was the owner and the parasites
were trespassing. They retreated from
his aerial attacks but me stayed
and was hit forcefully by the diving
long-tail. The impact could be heard
clearly. He went eventually and the
parasites flew off downstream. He
was then joined by another L.T.
with no ammunity shown.
Aug. 1
Young bird on lthoo again with both parents
in attendance. Got within 15 ft for jirds
adults give a warning "chomp" and young
yives a whizzy "cheeey chow chow".
Aug. 2
Found an adult with a juvenile across the
river on the first terrace. I had been slightly
aware of a nest in that area but
had been unable to confirm it.

Young jaeger on out ridge and other males
above. Still begging.
