Microtus oconomus
26 June Pitmezen River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Caught one in T3 - 0.2, Carex-eriochlamn.
4 July Caught one in T8 - 7.2 in 1' high arctophila. There
is evidence of a small population in this marsh
from fresh cuttings. The situation looks like
the area south of both area at Barrow but
much less extensive
7 July See journal and Rangifer for comments.
13 July Caught one T8 - 4.2 under E. vaginata tussock.
19 July Camp D. Pitmezen River, mi SE Cape Sabine Alaska
One caught under 4' willow (See M. mivorus)
21 July Caught one on hillside under Birch. Hillside gravelly
remnant of chapparal in Strawberry Canyon with cluff etc.
underneath. Area very marshy and low catch due
certainly to the rain
23 July Camp C. Pitmezen River, mi SE Cape Sabine, Alaska
Caught 4/4 here along edge of Carex aquatilis
and E. oblongus marsh where runways were
well developed and hay piles of carex 1-2"
long were cut and spread out. Apparently
both species of microtus do well in the upland
and if there is habitat segregation it is that
micros takes the drier areas where it can dig
and make extensive runways and this species
takes the wetter spots. Cover seems less important
to this species.
