MICROTUS
July 10 Uniat, 400ft., Alaska
Gil got 3 lastnight and me Tonight. One
looks peculiar and is probably a different
species. Sitzu got a good series both
here and at gubri I believe. He also
got than at Pt. Hope as did Schiller
earlier. Sitzer calls the strange one
reconomus and the Others murinus.
Aug 7 East Oumalik, 110mi SSE Barrow, Alaska
We were very successful in trapping both species
at this locality. It was apparent from our
trapping results that murinus was an inhabitant
of the willows with a sandy substrate and relatively
thick green ground cover while reconomus was
found in the wet, swampy areas, along the
"front heaves". This was borne out by the last trap
line which we ran along the edge of the lake.
There was one of these "permafrost ridges"
near the wind sock which paralleled the lake
edge. The catch was 6 Reconomus, 1 murinus, as
1 Lemmus thus showing some overlap. Murinus
was particularly abundant and they could be
heard and often seen scurrying about under
the willows. Fresh digging and holes were
everywhere in the tall willows.
