Childs 1960 Lemmus trimucronatus 21 may Barrow, Alaska Sign of lemmings everywhere back of the flat. We dug down to the surface in several places and found runaways everywhere, continues to form caverns as below. [snow] 5000000000 [illegible] submitted by body heat granular 27537 grams of feces surface No owls or jaegers seen although several pellets were found. 23 may Took measel out to Heath ridge and central marsh. Collected 91 lemmings by hand! Three were caught by circling an area of thin snow app. 200' in diameter and slowly decreasing the circle. 24 were taken by one such circle! glamorous gulls were feeding on lemmings in central marsh. No owls or jaegers. The sample of 91 was 6/87 to 297. Nearly all were adult pigs. The few small ones appear sexually mature. Wonder if these may be examples of retarded growth? 25 May Had no luck with our collecting system as snow either too deep or gone. Wonder if the glazed, thin ice acted as lens increasing heat and thereby concentrating lemmings on 5/23. Those areas are all free now.
