See journal account. Some melting of
snow on high cobble polygons along
the coast. Here the type of polygons
back of the church are just peep
through. In a short walk back
in that area we found a dead
lemmy on the surface. Crawford
reported an early snow in Sept. 12
which melted in a thaw in
October. In early November there
was a sudden cold snap which
resulted in a big die-off with
death of lemmings, easily obtained
in large numbers by the kids on
the surface. Apparently the kids
were clever enough to store the
sheep which Crawford would not
buy in their ice cellars in
anticipation of future sales. I
have instructed Crawford and Beere
to purchase only live ones this
year. His only reasonable to
suspect that any lemmings
purchased after November were
from that kill. It will be
highly significant to see if any
mature survived this "density udpult"
