14 July Pitneyea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
the 6th. The trap lines in that area have
been used by the jaegers, about half
dozen Longspurs and sandpipies being
eaten. I flushed one who carried trap
about 50. The aggressive chasing was
directed to parasi[t]t[ic]s also but both species
did not seem to respond to it and they
flew directly across the area.
16 July jaegers congregate, particularly parasites
along the river by our garbage during
net, at low ceiling windy days. I noted
2 long tails, one resting against the bluff
behind the tent and another a few feet away.
The latter was feeding actively on insects or
plant material; I suspect the former as the
area is one of deep snow and there is
little green material there now. I
have neglected to note the stomachs
of all jaegers collected contained just
our garbage. In this matter I have goofed
and should collected a series over the tundra.
No dark phase bird of this species have been
seen.
17 July During the night 4 came in to carbon parts
and they made a hell of a noise (squabbling)
among themselves.
