June 12 Warmwright, Alaska
should show a higher than normal
amount of younger animals utilizing
less favorable sites as the adults
should be less likely to move.
28 June Patwyen River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
after a lot of searching and run of 4 transects
(612 traps/3 days) there is still only the
evidence from owl pellets that this
species occurs here.
4 July at long last I trapped a ♀ (pregnant) in T5-7.2
in high Arctophila marsh.
5 July a ♂ was taken at T5-7.2 at the edge of Arctophila
under a willow. The suggestion (attn made
of the high nutritive value of grass vs. sedge-
may be correct one regarding cycles farther
North. Here it would appear as a summer
refuge to carry over the low population as
well as its being a habitat with plenty
of cover. The grass is thus and about eight
high. Much of the growth has taken
place since I got here as well as its
becoming available, because of drainage.
This area certainly is drier over a greater
area than any other place I've worked in
the arctic. This is due to the low humidity and
the warm earth winds which blow most of
the time. Note:
