Lemmus
June 11 Wainwright, Alaska
In the first running of the four transects
we caught 7 Lemmus, 5 of them in T1. Considering
the evidence for abundance of Lemmus here
the lack of correlation of catch with
obvious abundance leaves some doubt
as to the validity of the index. Transect
1 was screwed up with extra stakes
stakes missing and/or out of line. Situ-
normal.
June 12 The marsh where T3-Ty are located shows
a fairly high degree of utilization
although there are only a few Lemmus
here now and there on the high
edges of the polygons. It cannot be that
the winter population so spread out
fairly thinly and retreats from
the marsh to the high center stuff
as the snow melts and the area too
wet for occupancy. This movement
increases the density of the population
in the high center polygons which already
have utilized the grass between
polygons. The increased population
then really mows the grass until
the snow melt. There, which should
be several weeks later than the
marsh. With this snow melt
