Lemmings
13.
Aug 23 Point Barrow, Alaska.
Started to rain or sleet so that it froze upon hitting the ground. I do not feel that the snow was a possible mortality factor but the cold and rain of this evening may be a problem.
It was Hannas's opinion that the snow was generally too hard for burrowing in winter. If, as happened this time, the first snow is not packed in the protected vegetated areas, then the main burrows could be marked out before packing and hardening to the place.
Aug 24 Went out to the beach ridge and central marsh to look at snow and ice conditions. Near the glacis on top of the ridge there was a good snow cover with a 1/4" of ice on top. All the projecting vegetation was covered with a similar thickness of ice. This did not seem to be a problem to any Lemmings that might be resident there. However, in the marsh there was much less snow as a result of melting that had taken place. I doubt the thickness of the snow
