S. longicaudus
2
27 June Patuxent River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
I found the nest mentioned above - 2 eggs. Adults
dived bobbled me. I suspected another nest in
same drainage but did not find it.
29 June One seen diving on raven near Foleen
rocks
4 July Found one down young (black) to north of
T5 area where behavior of adults made
me suspect a nest earlier. The adults
mimicked the notes of a pectoral sandpiper,
giving the broken wing act. I never would
have suspected it if I hadn't gotten within
10' of one adult while he gave it at the
ground and on flight when he took off.
7 July A long-tail was obviously hunting small sandpiper
on the bar near Vincent today.
10 July I gave a dead twin to a Gyrfalcon this morning.
14 July Saw a long-tail kill a jay pectoral. It dove down
and apparently killed it immediately as
seconds later I flushed it. The jayger carried
it off about 200' and another joined it. I ran
as fast as I could, scared them both off, and
identified the prey. Already most of the skin
of the neck and back was torn and eaten.
This may be the pair with the young Bridgethams
I haven't seen the young one since. The head
I can't tell if it could have finished it yet I
have seen territorial chasing in this area.
