lemmings
7.
Aug.6 Point Barrow, Alaska
With the setting of transects 114/12 we
had our attention focused on a remarkable
population phenomenon for rodents. In
the area south of the Voth polygons
we found lemmings to be extremely
abundant in an area that was under
water a month ago. The vegetate
consists of Carex along the edge and
Arctophila in the very wet spots
along the axis of the drainage. This reads
6-10" in height and is very dense,
allowing the development of typical
meadow runways. In the time
this habitat has been available
the runways have been built to
maintained as well as those at
the Meade a month ago. In T12
we got 27 animals, half of which
were classified as adults. It would
seem that the lemmings in the
surrounding areas have moved
in as soon as the habitat became
dry enough for them, allowing their
utilization of the forage produced
while it was still under snow.
The same situation has been noted
in other areas in places where
