July 9 Atkaash, Meade River, Alaska
occurrence.
This species is noted for the abundance of
ecological evidence it leaves behind. One of the microtine trio, probably
this species makes scatotria in its
runways in which by use, the
scats are broken down into a green,
cement-like covering that may be a
foot long in the runway. In another
instance Child & I found a winter
nest from which was extended a
scat plug 1½" in diameter and was a
foot long. This had remained intact
when the snow melted. I did not
observe the scat platforms except
in marshy flat areas.
July 15 Wainwright Alaska
See journal. Very abundant here. Carex
and Eriophorum tussocks completely
mowed last winter. Windows of dead
glass everywhere yet little above ground
activity seen. Caught me on surface.
14 in traps since last night. No evidence
of Dicrostonyx yet.
July 16 On running the transects it was apparent
that lemmus was no longer being the tops
of the polygons but that it was down in the
