Stercorarius longicaudus
Jun 10 Mouth of the Pitmegea River, Alaska
One or 2 seen here as well as a jaekelagon.
Jun 11 Wainwright, Alaska
These seem to be closer to the village than the
Pomarines. Boys shot 3 Long Tails & one
Pomarine near graveyard.
Jun 15 Pitmegea River, Cape Saline, Alaska
Several flocks of 6-8 seen as well as singles or
pairs. They appear to be settling.
June 18 Long Tails seem to be the only species of the three
which give evidence of settling down and
defending area. At the north end of Loon Marsh
a pair actively "dive-bombed" members of
a group of Pomarines and Parasitics that
flew through, chased and then returned to
the original area. Jaegers of all species were
active today over the marsh and along the
river. A flock of Pomarines and another of
6 Parasitics were seen. The Long Tails
are scattered. Several were sitting
on mounds in the polygon area of Loon
Marsh near T2. The cries of the Long
tails remind me of Eskimo dogs howling
at Wainwright
Jun 19 With the clearing weather, the majority of Jaegers
have disappeared. One L.T. still chasing and
calling near stream N of Loon Marsh.
24 June Cantlon reported nest with eggs 3 miles upriver along stream.
