Lemmus trimucronatus
June 26 Point Barron, Alaska
Set out transect 3 in low center polygon area last
night and ran it at 1100 this morning. got 4
lemmings and one longspur. Nearly observed
wet pellets of mud that had been recently pushed
out of a burrow—rain had started an hour or
so earlier.
July 2 4.74 in L2 (8-566). Upon release it started to
feed immediately on a moss. It seemed weak
although the weather was warm and there
was little wind. It feed with a jerky
pulling movement at the food. It then
fed on some grass which it seemed to
have trouble cutting but when it had
cut off about a 2" piece it was several second
around it, starting from one end. It.
showed no fear or any attempt to find
shelter. I watched it in blinds and lenses
from about 2' and it appeared to ignore
or not even recognize my presence. It
seemed to prefer the moss which was
scattered only a handful of spikes of it
being close by. Grass (Arctagrostis) was
more abundant and was utilized second.
Merrih brought in a lemming caught south of the
Village yesterday that they had tried to
keep alive in the lab. It had been fed on
lettuce but apparently this was not sufficient
