29 June Patnesea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Cade took one at T1 -3.6 (SA) on 5/22. No
other sign of them to date
17 July Wainwright, Alaska
Eckles boys brought in an adult & before
dinner. They said that many of total tundra
were caught at melt-off time with
lemmings more abundant but not much.
White mice were common. We moved boat
not purchasing them this year.

19 July Took a adult with an adult lemming, at T4-0.0.
Natives indicate earlier that those moved with the
houses in the village.
23 July Meade River Coal Mine, Alaska
Have taken 2 specimens to date here. Very little
mouse activity anyway noted.
I am most impressed with the color of the
tundra at this time. Vaccinium vitis-idaea is
in blossom and very abundant on the higher
drier areas. The flowers are pink. The variety
of lichens, of several colors and brown sphagnum
moss make a background color which
is extremely variegated and ideal for
a mouse with the foliage of Dicrostonyx.
Nothing approaching this occurs at the
Patnesea except in the restricted Barrens.
