CHILDOS 1951 Citellus parryi June 3 Point Barrow, Alaska Schiller got one at the Dran River Sea Catalog. July 10 Uniat, 400 ft., Alaska Gil #9 found fresh diggings at the base of Uniat Mt. Aug 5 East Aumalik, 110 mi. SSE Barrow, Alaska This animal is extremely abundant in this locality. Its burrow can be found almost anywhere there is any bushy cover along steam banks or on the bluffs. Appears that they respond to any situation where there is "escape cover." Thus the "sit-sit" was very abundant in camp, using pipes and 55 gallon drums as refuges. Little burrowing was noted in the camp area so that it may be that the camp is marginal habitat and the squirrels using it would be lost over winter. We took 15 animals from within 25 yds of the cook wamnigan where the squirrels would come after food wastes. They were particularly fond of bread & poppy seeds. About 4 squirrels were caught in pipes or between Barrels by the simple process of one of us holding a burlap sack over the opening & the other chasing it into the sack from the other end.
