2 June
Ptarmigan River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
1228 watched male drive away continually
3 other males from a female feed, and apparently
not watching the proceedings. Actual body
contact took place in 3 instances although most
of the time the intruder retreated when flown
at by the resident M. A threat note "spit"
was given. No singing took place during
these engagements. Interpret this to be
early in the pair formation before the bond
was firmly made and before nesting had started
The results of these censuses seem to indicate
that most of the clutches are now just completed
and that Begg is the model clutch size.
