Childs 1958 Calcaris lapponicus 23 May Wainwright, Alaska a group of three were seen in the village along the bluff in the evening. These were the first of the year for Barrow or here. 25 May Yesterday and today mutes have been moving through the village at the edge of the bluff. None were seen out on the ridge although some areas are exposed. 26 May We were surprised to find these birds regularly moving out on the ice 10 miles from shore at the whaling camps. Males were even singing their flight song 30 May Atmoyea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska Birds common, males singing. Pairs seen feeding together on the bar. 31 May Pete found a nest w/5 eggs near T2-0.0 other female seen gathering nesting material in front of our tent at 2100. 1 June 4 nests found. 3w/6 1w/5 eggs. Males are not too busy displaying, singing or squabbling. Territories seem to be well established and most clutches complete. 2 June Censused bird plots 142. 13 nests found 7w/6; 1w/5; 2w/4; 2w/0.
