As we stopped to get a drink at the top of
the mountain behind the lagoon, a white
wagtail landed about 20 ft from us. As
I changed to a lighter load it flew off and
could not be found again. It wagged its
tail, was long and thin, grey & white with
no facial marking. White anterial feet
with darker center rectrices. Thought
at first it was a wheatear but too long
and slender and no white rump patch.
One more second and it would have been
a dead bird!
24gun Collected a bird (2902) which was probably
the above although this one seems browner
than the one seen on the 19th. Collected on
top of mt. behind lagoon. It was shy
although it seemed to be interested in the
spot where we ate. Took it with a beautiful
wing shot but with two large pellets (9).
30gun Collected another of these birds (2918) at the
edge of a steep bank behind Wolverine Mt.
There were at least 2 others. They were very
as one was seen with food in its bill. There
are extremely shy, restless birds which
do not allow close approach. This undoubtedly
flight when colding makes them hard
to shoot on the wing. They give a flight
