Parasitic Jaeger
Stercorarius parasiticus
June 9 Point Barrow, Alaska.
The first jaeger that we have been able to identify with
certainty flew over the transit area this morning, although
we have seen jaegers everyday.
June 12 a dark phase bird flew over the transit
at Elson Lagoon. Later a similar (and per-
haps identical) bird landed and appeared
to drink.
June 13 3 in a group flew over Elson Transit, 2 dark & 1 light.
June 18 One over Lt E
June 20 a dark phase over marsh in a.m.
June 28 2 " " flew over salt pond S W cap
July 7 2 dark phase flew over N and L W; First
saw a size difference : 1 = pair.
July 13 We saw 3 on the W side of the marsh, 2
acting like a pair. 2 were dark phase
July 14 The pair of dark phase birds were seen in
the same area feeding on the ground.
July 16 Same pair seen together on the ground. One
could have been taken as we approached
quite close to it. It had apparently been
feeding on a longspur.
Aug 7 East Dumolid, 110 mi S S E Barrow, Alaska
This species was the most common and
both phases were noted for the first
time. There were also individuals in the
dark phase with white flashes in the
primaries. One was collected.
