Childs 1955 Nyctea scandiaca June 26 Point Barrow, Alaska Observed two in the area, one near transect 2 and one near transect 3. July 1 Two birds in the area near live plot 2 regularly. July 5 Atkasuk, Meade River, Alaska One seen chased by a long-tailed jaeger. 5 were seen from the plane on the way down. July 9 One on ridge near T2 at 2000. July 15 Warmright, Alaska More dense bore than I have ever seen. We had 6 within a mile radius of no last night. Have not seen nests yet but I believe they may be here. Native apparently trap them as burros by placing a steel trap on a log. Saw 2 carcasses along the shore ridge caught in this manner and several other traps. Heard their call at it bears no slot to an out shoot. July 19 The owls have mostly gone, only 2 out there today. They probably were blown inland by the high onshore winds. No evidence of breeding. July 22 Although birds have been present here in some numbers, although less now, I have been unable to find a fresh owl pellet or many, many mounds I have looked at. The natives shoot them in sight - they pay for dog food.
