Snowy Owl
Nyctea scandiaca
June 9 Point Barrow Alaska
I found a pellet with a weasel skull in it on the mid-
ridge where I set the trap line. We saw one near the
eskimo village day before yesterday.
June 11 I picked up a well preserved specimen in the snow
in the barrel dump. It apparently had starved to death.
June 12 0830 we flew across and landed south of
camp as we were going out to the transects.
It flew on as we approached in the weasel.
June 13 One flew across marsh south of first ridge from
the mid-ridge and was chased by sandpipers and
arctic Terns.
June 17 One was sitting on weather station on first ridge
Franz shot at it but did not get it. The
roost was checked for pellets but none found.
July 13 Someone reported seeing one 6 mi S. I do
not remember details
July 15 Frank saw one on E W
July 17 One was at the edge of E. It had
been in the same place for some time as
apparently all judging from the feces
which were green & stringy. There was
another to the north if I'm.
July 19 Both still present in the Dave area
Aug 7 East Ommalik, 110 mi SSE Barrow, Alaska
There was no pellets to be found on the mounds in
this area and no sign of this species, although the
Microtus were here in abundance.
