K Pearson 1952 Stromyc Peruanus April 8 Pichpichuria 1200ft, 8 km. N.W. Huacullani, Dept. of Puno, Peru. Watched tucos on the papa from about 8 A.M. Many tucos visible, feeding. Some ducke back into their holes backward, most dive in forwards. Easily startled. Saw one startled by a lizard moving about a foot away, but the tuco reacted quickly and appeared unconcerned about the lizard after that. No hawk flew overhead, one tucos gave a bubble and ducked out of sight. Other tucos also ducked. No response to sea gull overhead. By 9 A.M. things quieting down, fewer tucos out. On Payne's Census Area I did some collecting, and saw small tuco, some inside hucos that belonged to a lactating female collected earlier. They did not come out of the holes very far, but cautiously poke their heads up just far enough to see the hunter. They did much bubbling, both while they watched and under- ground. I shot one, and I believe there are still two more. I did not see them eat.
