Palmer 1937 January Jan. 1 Laguna Beach Calif to San Juan Creek Cmt.4. Fresh gopher workers. These were easy to see, since all old mounds had been packed down and washed over by recent heavy rains. The area trapped was on the NW side of the road, between the road and the creek. The creek and some of the ground nearby was rocky, but much of the canyon bottom - here about 3/8 mi. wide is level and made up of fairly deep dark brown sandy loam. Gopher workings were found here only in this type of soil. In the valley bottom were numerous sycamores (along the stream), some coast line oak (Quercus agrifolia), much prickly pear (Opuntia sp.) and sage (Artemisia californica?), and here & there scattered clumps of Rhus integrifolia and R. laurina - 6-10 ft. in height. The ground surface was covered with Erodium and grasses (mostly foxtail) and appeared very green. At this locality - San Juan Creek, 8.5 mi. NE Capistrano, Orange Co. Calif. I made 15 sets with 23 Macabee gopher
