Itinerary
May 23 cont'd.
Little Shasta R., 3000 ft.
Several streams with only small areas
between. This makes for a rank growth
of vegetation. Along the streams there are
thick tangles of willow and chokecherry
with many large cottonwoods. There are
also a few yellow pines scattered along the
creek. The areas between the streams
are generally damp, some meadow
with a heavy growth of perennial grasses.
The area on either side of the streams
is largely dry hard alder with a
moderately heavy growth of Bromus,
Andeum and Erodium. Where the stream-
side growth joins this dry open country,
there are generally, large Garry Oaks
and Cottonwoods. To the S of camp
is Table Rock, a description of which will
be found under notes for May 20.
Birds seen at this camp according to general
habitat preference. Streamside: Song Sparrow,
Lazuli Bunting, Yellow Warbler, Golden
Pileated Warbler, Vigors Bewick Wren, Thrush (sp.)
Long-tailed Chat. Large trees near stream:
Chipping Sparrow, Black-headed Grosbeak,
Western Wood Pewee, Ash-Throated Flycatcher,
Bullock Oriole, Western Tanager, Lewis's Woodpecker,
