Little Shasta R., 3000 ft.
Caught a Rana [illegible] that was sitting on a rock when
we crossed the river near camp.
In P.M. drove N to the place where we
camped the 1st night in this locality: Little
Shasta River, 2800 ft., 8 mi. E Montague, Siskiyou
Co., Calif. Here we set gopher traps, but
the gophers are very scarce. Spent about 2 hrs.
looking for gopher workings and made
only 3 sets. Shot a Vigors Bewick Wren in the
willows along the river. Followed a flock of Plain Titmice around trying to get a
shot but they are too wary. Other birds seen
here were: Yellow Warbler, Long-tailed Chat,
Brewer's Blackbird, Redwing Blackbird, Western
Tanager, Bullock Oriole, California Quail,
Mourning Dove, Killdeer, Crow, and
Green-backed Goldfinch. While setting
the gopher traps, scared up a Lepus
californicus. Returned to camp, looking
for gopher workings on the way but found
no more.
