May 20 cold.
Little Shasta River, 3000 ft.
and other low annuals. In The cliffs a few Gooseberry bushes were growing. Saw lots of Woodrat and Porcupine droppings in the broken jumbles of rock along the cliff. There were many Violet-green Swallows around The cliffs and a number of Rock-Wrens. I hunted all along the cliff for Canyon Wrens but did not see or hear any. Saw a Western Bluebird in the Garry Oaks. Heard a Western Redtail screaming down toward the W end of the cliffs. On the way back met Johnson who reported hearing The Canyon Wren again in a part of The cliff I hadn't covered.
May 21 This A.M. went around to the S. side of Table Rock (Martin's Meadow) where I made 7 sets with #1 steel traps for Marmots. On the way back to camp saw several young Citellus douglasii in the grass. They had dug small burrows close by a large burrow which I assumed to be the parents'. They showed little fear, allowing me to approach within 5 or 6 ft. before they ducked into the burrows. On the N slope leading up to Table Rock, I saw a Plain Titmouse in the Garry Oaks.
