May 16 cont'd. Big Spring, 2700 ft., Shasta Valley, Siskiyou Co., Calif.
Set up camp here in the rain. I didn't
feel well, so went to bed about 6 P.M. Set no traps.
May 17
Camp here is at the edge of the Juniper
country, much like that of the last
camp. However, to the W and NW there
is lots of green meadow land, largely
boggy. Across the road to the W is a
good-sized lake which is formed from
several large springs. Around the
edges are many tule, with lush grass
coming down to the edge of the lake.
Shot one Lark Sparrow as he was singing
from the top of a dead Juniper. Birds
seen here this morning: Audubon Warbler,
Pileated Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Robin,
Brewer Blackbird, Redwing Blackbird,
Yellow-headed Blackbird, Song-Sparrow,
Meadowlark, Linnet, Lazuli Bunting,
Chipping Sparrow, Wood Pewee and
Western Kingbird.
In the afternoon saw a Plain Titmouse,
shot at it, and missed. Johnson returned
from setting his traps and reported what
from his description must be a Yellow-
Throat. In the evening saw a duck of
