low annuole. The entire country is covered by a moderately thick growth of Juniperus occidentalis with a very few stunted Pinus ponderosa.
May 16. During the night it rained off and on. I was awakened several times by a Neotoma which chewed on the foot of my sleeping bag. It appeared to be unafraid of the flashlight. I set two traps hoping to catch it. Instead, caught a Dipodomys heermanni.
Caught mammals of the following species: Dipodomys heermanni, 22; Peromyscus truei, 5; P. maniculatus, 2; Perognathus parvus, 2; Neotoma macroura, 1 in 100 mousetraps.
Birds seen in this area: Red-tailed Hawk (See D.H. Johnson's notes for details of nest and contents), Meadowlark, Cedar Waxwing, Audubon Warbler, Hammond Flycatcher, Violet-green Swallow, Bush Tit. Collected 2 California Jays and 1 Plain Titmouse. Spent 2 hours hunting in the rain, but saw no more Tittmouses.
Drove to Big Spring after noon. On the road saw: Western Kingbird, California Jay, Linnert, Larke Sparrow, Brown Towhee, Brewer Blackbird, and Redwing Blackbird.
